Description

In a marble‑faced ducal hall of ancient Ephesus, a weary trader faces a stern duke and his retinue, accused of breaking a bitter commercial embargo between Syracusae and Ephesus. The duke reminds the assembly that the law already demands blood for unpaid debts, and Aegeon, the condemned merchant, knows his fate hangs on the balance of justice and old grudges. From the first exchange, tension crackles between rival cities, family honor, and a looming death sentence.

He answers the duke’s questions by recounting his life: born in bustling Syracuse, a brief marriage that brought joy, the loss of a son, and a disastrous sea voyage that left his ship shattered. The wreck forces him and his wife to cling together as the sea swallows their hopes, and a chance rescue by fishermen leaves them bruised but alive. Through this confession, listeners glimpse a man caught between personal tragedy and the unforgiving statutes of his age, as the court’s verdict draws ever nearer.

About the author

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare

1564–1616

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
