In a late‑autumn fair at Mécringes, ten‑year‑old Constant Louvet watches a wooden‑puppet rendition of Geneviève de Brabant and, mimicking the villain Golo, instantly earns a nickname that will follow him forever. The vivid spectacle of glittering palaces, shifting forest scenes and dramatic music sparks his imagination, and his improvised recitation leaves the village children shouting his new moniker with delight. From that moment, the boy known as Golo carries the echo of the stage into the everyday life of the small farming community of Villebard.
Raised by his aunt in the modest hamlet of Le Chep, Golo balances schoolwork with a voracious appetite for legends, fairy tales, and the old songs his aunt once sang while preparing her famous matelotte. He spends afternoons turning the stories of the Blue Bird and Friquet the Squirrel into lively retellings for his friends, his bright eyes and quick wit making him a natural storyteller. The opening of the novel follows his early days, hinting at the ways his love of performance and folklore will shape his future adventures.
