Description

Set against the bustling growth of New France in the late 1600s, the novel paints a vivid portrait of a colony on the brink of prosperity. Through the eyes of François de Bienville, a determined settler, readers encounter the ambitious policies of the Marquis de Tracy and Intendant Talon, who push the frontier outward with new farms, timber camps, and nascent towns along the Saint‑Lawrence. The narrative weaves real historical events—such as the 1665 Carignan regiment’s arrival and the early explorations of Jolliet, Marquette, and La Salle—into a lively drama that brings the era’s hopes and hardships to life.

But the colony’s expansion soon meets fierce resistance from the Iroquois, spurred on by English rivals from New England. De Bienville finds himself caught between the governor’s military campaigns and the daily struggles of ordinary families trying to carve a future from the wilderness. As alliances shift and tensions rise, the story follows his personal courage and the collective resolve of the settlers, offering a window into the gritty reality of life on the early Canadian frontier.
