High in the Erzgebirge, the jagged silhouettes of Bärenstein, Scheibenberg and their neighboring peaks watch over a patchwork of meadows, dark forests and lonely moors. A winding brook carves a natural border between two states and two church districts, slipping past a quiet forest garden before reaching the old Bretmühle, a humble mill that has become the heart of the valley’s daily rhythm. The landscape’s stark contrasts echo the lives of the people who work its soil and water.
In this remote valley lives Bretschneiderfritz, a seasoned miller known for his skill, honesty and a modest prosperity that earns the respect of both young and old. Though the community admires him, Fritz finds his world unsettled by a tender, unrequited affection for Kordel, the miller’s apprentice’s daughter, whose shy independence both draws him in and keeps him at arm’s length. Determined yet uncertain, Fritz turns to his own master for help, setting in motion a delicate dance of courtship that reveals the quiet hopes and obstacles of life in the mountains.
