Description

In a modest house called The Gables, a widowed mother struggles to keep her four children afloat after the death of their clergyman husband. With limited means, she has been renting out rooms and hoping for a final appeal to the children’s proud grandfather, whose anger over a long‑ago marriage choice now threatens any help. The story opens with the eldest boy, Hugh, vowing to shield his mother from further insult, while the family’s hopes teeter on the edge of disappointment.

The children—Hugh, his brothers Frank and Ronald, and little Elsie—dream of bold futures, from sailing the seas to farming abroad, yet their mother worries that a simple board school may be all they can afford. Their fierce loyalty and youthful ambition clash with the harsh realities of inheritance, pride, and a distant patriarch, setting the stage for a tale about love, resentment, and the search for peace within a fractured family.
