Eileen Bannister, a bright fourteen‑year‑old with a talent for stories and sketches, wanders onto the garden of Mr. Derrick Charlton, a weary editor enjoying a prescribed seaside holiday. She asks for five minutes of his time, hoping he might read a story she has illustrated and perhaps give her a chance to earn money. As they talk, Eileen reveals the looming threat of losing her family’s beloved home, The Gables, unless the mortgage can be paid before Christmas.
Charlton, intrigued by her determination and the earnestness in her voice, agrees to listen and offers modest encouragement, though he knows the publishing world can be a hard place for a child writer. Meanwhile, Eileen’s siblings—Teddy, Nora, and Frank—each contribute in their own way, turning ordinary chores into tiny earn‑in‑ventures for the family fund. The story follows the children's lively schemes and the gentle, sometimes bittersweet, bond that forms between the editor and the young siblings as they strive to keep their home intact.
