In early 20th‑century Amsterdam, a thirteen‑year‑old boy named Tamal lives under the watchful eye of his father, who cherishes him and shares evenings of storytelling. His days are spent at the local chapel, where the choir’s soaring hymns awaken a deep, unspoken yearning within him. The young boy’s imagination is fed by saints’ lives, kings, and distant battles, yet he remains largely silent. These quiet moments plant the seeds of a first, tender love for music.
As winter settles, Tamal’s fascination turns restless; he begins to wander the streets, dreaming of far‑away lands and heroic deeds while his father pressures him back into the choir. An apprenticeship with a silversmith offers a steady routine, but the clang of the workshop cannot silence the vivid pictures that dance behind his eyes. He starts to spend evenings in taverns with other youths, seeking the world beyond his narrow path.
At sixteen, a fleeting encounter with a bright, smiling girl stirs emotions, pulling him toward possibilities he has never imagined. The story follows his struggle between duty, desire, and the longing to turn reverie into reality.
