Description

A young man named Fred Byram steps into the grim world of a coal‑breaker, hoping to earn a modest wage to support his mother. The story opens with his nervous first shift, the deafening roar of coal tumbling through chutes, and the harsh, dust‑filled environment that tests his resolve. Under the watchful eye of a seasoned foreman, Fred learns the brutal rhythm of separating slate from coal, feeling the sting of raw labor on his hands while the pressure to avoid debt looms over every move.

As the day wears on, the mine’s relentless pace reveals both camaraderie and rivalry among the workers, each trying to survive in a place where a single mistake can cost more than just a wage. Fred’s determination to prove himself and protect his family draws him into the gritty reality of life underground, where every shift is a battle against fatigue, danger, and the unforgiving grind of the breaker itself.
