In the bustling port town where a European household has just arrived, Beate Hoyermann finds herself thrust into the chaotic swirl of Japanese streets. Her husband’s official duties leave her dependent on a rickshaw, and the impatient driver’s frantic shouts echo like a steam whistle through the crowd. Two rival pullers—Akira and Mosaku—compete fiercely for every passenger, turning each ride into a spectacle of speed and pride. Through these daily races Beate gets her first, vivid glimpse of a culture that feels both alien and oddly compelling.
Determined to bridge the gap, she pores over a pocket dictionary, stumbling over numbers and phrases while trying to catch the rhythm of the language. As the rivalry intensifies, she watches how polite gestures mask a simmering tension, and begins to sense the deeper patterns of loyalty and honor that shape the community. The novel follows her gradual shift from bewildered outsider to someone who can read the subtle currents of a world far from her own, all while the restless streets keep humming around her.
