NOTES
THE TITLE
Errors In The Codex Corrected By Bryennios.
This short work brings a rare glimpse of a second‑century Christian manual that was hidden in a Byzantine manuscript until the nineteenth‑century scholar Philotheos Bryennios made it public. Carefully edited and rendered in a literal English translation, the text lets modern ears hear the very words once spoken by the earliest disciples as they instructed new believers. Listeners can sense the quiet urgency of a community eager to define its identity amid a pluralistic world.
The teaching opens with a striking contrast between two roads—life and death—then outlines a concise ladder of virtues: love God, love neighbor, give without expectation, and reject selfish cravings. It proceeds to a list of prohibitions that echo the Ten Commandments, forbidding murder, theft, false witness and many forms of sexual immorality. By the end of the excerpt, the tone is both gentle and firm, inviting listeners to embody compassion while steering clear of false teachings.
