Description

In a sun‑baked valley that the native peoples once called Buffalo Meadows, a weary wagon‑train pauses beside a shallow pool, the last splash of water before the endless sand. The Stevens family—father, mother, a toddler, and thirteen‑year‑old Dick—has barely escaped a fruitless chase for a homestead, their belongings reduced to patched clothing and a pair of skeletal horses. Their hopes rest on reaching the modest town of Willow Point, where a new start might finally be within reach.

Dick, ever the pragmatist, promises his mother he’ll find a way to replace their torn rags, even if it means parting with his prized rifle. Though his father frets over the frail animals and the perils of the desert crossing, the boy’s confidence stays steady, recalling the river crossing they survived months before. As the caravan prepares to push on, the stark landscape and dwindling supplies set the stage for a test of endurance and family resolve.
