Description

A Jesuit chronicle from 1745 follows two fearless missionaries as they set sail from Buenos Aires toward the remote waters of the Magellanic coast. Their primary task is to assess the suitability of San Julian Bay for a new settlement, and the diary records every obstacle they encounter—dense fog, treacherous reefs, and a barren landscape that offers little game, fuel or fresh water. The narrative blends meticulous cartographic corrections with vivid descriptions of the sea’s moods, overturning earlier reports that had exaggerated the region’s riches.

Beyond the scientific survey, the account captures the daily rhythm of the expedition’s spiritual life. Daily Mass, communal rosaries and a heartfelt novena to Saint Francis Xavier sustain the crew, while the missionaries lead by example, sharing food, guiding soldiers along rough paths, and bearing simple symbols of faith. Their diligence and compassion create a poignant portrait of a 1740s venture that is as much a testament to human endurance as to the early mapping of South America’s southernmost frontier.
