A restless trio of riders journeys along the Rhine, their conversation a mixture of intrigue, rivalry and whispered legends. Among them rides a charismatic German noble, a flamboyant Spanish‑Jewish doctor, and a young knight still nursing a hidden wound. Their encounter with a striking, golden‑haired stranger on an Arab horse hints at a larger, mysterious purpose that will soon draw them into a perilous pilgrimage.
The narrative soon turns to the shepherd boy Nikolas, a humble child from the German countryside whose simple life is swept up by the fervor of the so‑called Children’s Crusade of 1212. As word spreads of a holy mission to reclaim lost relics and restore a sense of divine destiny, Nikolas finds himself caught between the hopes of earnest believers and the shadowy designs of those who would exploit the movement.
Listeners will be carried through vivid medieval landscapes— bustling Cologne, the fragrant valleys of the Rhine, and distant southern courts—while the young shepherd’s innocence clashes with the complex motives of the traveling companions. The story promises adventure, faith, and the timeless question of how far a child’s courage can carry a nation.

A once-famous German writer and composer from Muskau, he moved easily between poetry, novels, and music. His life touched both quiet provincial life and the cultured world around Prince Pückler-Muskau, giving his work an unusual mix of intimacy and ambition.
