Description

Susan Hawthorne has inherited more than a name and a modest sum from her larger‑than‑life father, a wanderer who crossed continents with reckless optimism. Left alone in a world that feels both familiar and foreign, she wrestles with the loss of her friends and the lingering shadow of a man who seemed invincible. Determined to stand on her own feet, she seeks a foothold in the bustling streets of England, hoping to turn the little courage she inherited into a practical future.

A chance encounter with Lord Hannassay, a man once close to her father, offers her a surprising lifeline—a typist position that promises both training and a roof over her head. Their conversation crackles with nervous politeness, each wary of the other's expectations, yet the offer feels less like charity and more like an invitation to prove herself. As Susan settles into the rhythm of copying letters and learning the subtleties of a high‑level household, she begins to glimpse the wider currents of politics and power that swirl just beyond her desk, hinting at a new chapter of discovery ahead.
