by Leslie Charteris
Born Leslie Charles Bowyer Yin in Singapore in 1907, Leslie Charteris became famous for creating Simon Templar, better known as The Saint. The character first appeared in Meet the Tiger in 1928 and went on to star in a long-running series that helped make Charteris an international name in crime and adventure fiction.
Charteris was educated in England and later lived in the United States, where he also worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood. His fiction blended mystery, action, humor, and a light touch of satire, giving The Saint stories an energy that kept readers coming back across decades.
He continued shaping the Saint franchise well beyond the earliest novels, and his work inspired films, radio, television, and comic adaptations. Charteris died in 1993, but his most famous hero remains one of the classic figures of popular suspense writing.
