This volume gathers the daily reports, instructions and private letters of France’s ambassador to England during the turbulent years of the late 1560s. Through his eyes we hear the rhythm of court ceremonies, the ebb and flow of negotiations, and the subtle pressures that shaped Franco‑English relations in the reign of Elizabeth I. The texts retain their original orthography, giving listeners an authentic glimpse of six‑teenth‑century diplomatic language.
Among the earliest dispatches is a vivid complaint about intercepted correspondence, a plea for English support to the embattled Scottish queen, and rumors of poisonings that rattled both courts. The ambassador’s meticulous accounts of English officials, secretive postal routes and the fragile peace between rival powers bring the period’s intrigue to life, while the editor’s careful transcription makes these fragile manuscripts accessible for modern ears.

A French diplomat at the courts of Elizabeth I and James VI, he left behind vivid letters from one of the most tense and fascinating periods in European politics. His surviving correspondence still helps readers glimpse how power, religion, and rivalry shaped the late 1500s.
