Description

A teenage boy named Amos tells the story of his friendship with Jeremiah, who together grow up on the Chesapeake shore of Benedict, Maryland, while the nation still aches from the War of 1812. When the British threaten again, the boys’ personal vendetta—Jeremiah’s brother was seized by a Royal officer—drives them to support Commodore Joshua Barney’s daring fleet. Their youthful enthusiasm leads them into a covert network of “young spies,” sneaking messages, piloting small boats, and gathering intelligence for the American defense.

The narrative captures a vivid slice of early‑19th‑century coastal life, where oystering, family feuds, and patriotic fervor mix with the looming danger of invasion. Readers watch as the two boys navigate secret tunnels, confront rival militia, and experience the tension of watching the capital’s fate teeter on the brink. Their daring deeds offer a fresh, ground‑level perspective on the events that culminated in the burning of Washington, all told with the immediacy of a boy’s voice.
