Description

The story opens on a sweltering October afternoon in Naples, where two teenage boys—Hugh, known as “Rags” for his hot‑headed spirit, and his steadier companion Gerald, nicknamed “Sunny Jim”—are finishing a summer holiday abroad. Both have been held back from school by a bout of malaria, and they’re eager to catch a ship back to England. Their lively banter and quick reflexes keep them out of trouble as they weave through bustling crowds and a chaotic street scene.

Their hurried departure takes an unexpected turn when they spot a familiar face—Arthur Reeves, a larger‑than‑life war correspondent with a reputation for daring exploits. Reeves, half‑blind in one eye and hard of hearing in one ear, offers the boys a ride, insisting they share their story in a minute before he must be on his way. Intrigued by his colorful past—covering distant conflicts and surviving a bullet wound—Rags and Jim find themselves pulled into a new, perilous venture that promises to carry them far beyond the tranquil Italian coast, toward the tumultuous front lines of Tripoli.
