Description

This volume presents a scholarly survey that began as the 1888 Duff Lectures, expanding into an eighteen‑part treatise on Buddhism as found in the Pāli canon and later traditions. It traces the religion’s early connections with Brahmanism and Hindu thought, examines shared concepts with Jainism, and sets those ideas against the backdrop of Christian theology. The author weaves textual analysis with historical context, making the complex evolution of Buddhist doctrine approachable for listeners new to the subject.

Drawing on decades of research, the work moves beyond the ancient texts to consider medieval developments, Tibetan influences, and modern scholarly debates. The author's deep familiarity with Sanskrit, Pāli, and emerging translations lends authority without overwhelming jargon. Listeners will come away with a clear picture of how Buddhism fits within the wider tapestry of Indian spirituality and how it has been compared to, and distinguished from, Christianity.
