Description

A weary Confederate soldier rides a rattling train toward Richmond, hoping for rest and a glimpse of the city he left behind. Among the cramped passengers—a mix of farmers, wounded men, and a solitary woman in a plain brown cloak—he finds himself oddly drawn to the mystery of her quiet presence. When a sudden jolt sends her small parcel spilling, his brief act of courtesy sparks a fleeting exchange that hints at deeper stories hidden behind her concealment.

The narrative unfolds against the stark winter landscape and the tense atmosphere of a war‑torn capital, where every traveler must prove his loyalty at the Provost‑Marshal’s office. As the protagonist navigates his own memories of youth, family longing, and the stark realities of battle‑scarred life, he becomes entangled in the enigmatic woman's concealed purpose. Their tentative connection sets the stage for a poignant exploration of honor, survival, and the fragile hope that can emerge even in the darkest days of conflict.
