Description

In a lavish Markish manor, young Helene moves through the great hall, the lingering perfume of waffles and Parisian scent stirring dreams of silk gowns, jeweled necklaces, and distant grandeur. Around her, the household swirls with genteel chatter of a departing family, the sharp eyes of a disciplined cavalry officer, and the quiet reveries of her mother—called Omama—who watches the garden beyond the window. The scene is painted with the clink of china, the soft ticking of a cuckoo clock, and the subtle tension between aristocratic rituals and a yearning for something beyond.

The old rider walks his dogs with precise method, his thoughts drifting back to past glories and a lingering resentment toward the younger generation, hinting at buried rivalries. Meanwhile, Helene feels a blush rise at the memory of a celebrated empress, her imagination tangled with whispered stories of elegance and loss. The novel invites listeners into this textured world, where each scent, glance, and secret hints at the complex ties that bind a family to its heritage and to the inevitable changes on the horizon.
