Description

A French officer haunted by a secretive mission awakens before dawn in a desert fort, his mind racing with both dread and fascination. He and his companion André de Saint‑Avit are bound for the barren plateaus of the Sahara, charged with a scientific survey that may conceal something far more enigmatic. The narrative drifts between the harsh, sun‑bleached landscape and the narrator’s uneasy anticipation of an ancient mystery hidden beneath the sand.

Through vivid descriptions of silent jackals, smoking guides, and the relentless heat, the story captures the uneasy blend of military order and primal curiosity. As the expedition sets out, the reader feels the pull of unseen forces—legendary ruins, forgotten civilizations, and the faint echo of Plato’s Atlantis. The opening promises an adventure where scholarly pursuit collides with the awe‑inspiring and uncanny depths of the desert itself.
