Description

The book traces the emergence of an unmistakable American Unitarian voice in hymnody, following a half‑century of cultural ferment that shifted worship away from plain psalm‑singing toward fresh lyrical expression. Drawing on almost fifty hymn collections compiled between the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it shows how educated ministers and lay editors scoured both British non‑conformist sources and the burgeoning literary scene for material that reflected a living, rational faith. The narrative highlights the way these compilations introduced readers to poets such as Anne Steele, Adam Cowper and later, more daring American contributors, allowing Unitarian congregations to sing with a literary vigor uncommon in orthodox churches of the time.

Among the early American hymnists profiled are surprising figures like a former president who turned to verse after leaving office, and a poet‑minister whose universal hymn still resonates today. The work also follows the pioneering editors who, eager to enrich worship, borrowed from the likes of Sir Walter Scott and Sarah Flower Adams, while discovering the hymn‑potential in contemporary poets such as Whittier. Together, they forged a tradition that married theological openness with artistic ambition, setting a distinctive tone for American religious music.
