Description

A weary traveler on a long trek through the French‑Spanish border finds himself welcomed into a sumptuous house near Nismes. The hostess, a strikingly elegant young woman who can only whisper, immediately captivates him with her grace and the lavish surroundings. Their brief encounter hints at a delicate balance between hospitality and hidden motives, setting the tone for a tale of intrigue.

Soon the narrator discovers that the lady’s quiet charm masks a tangled situation. A mysterious gentleman in a white military uniform—later revealed to be the very mistress himself—appears, shattering the initial illusion of pure refinement. This unexpected revelation fuels suspicion and raises questions about loyalty, status, and the true nature of the household’s occupants.

Tensions rise when the husband, Mons. Saigny, returns, offering feigned generosity while his temper flares. The traveler is drawn into a clash of pride and caution, forced to decide whether to stand his ground or retreat, all against the backdrop of a wintry landscape that mirrors the cold undercurrents of the house.
