Description

The story opens as a family celebrates the end of a brutal war, only to be shaken by the sudden loss of Uncle Howard, a beloved twin brother and hero. Their mother, stoic yet grieving, decides to bring home Carol, the orphaned son of the fallen officer, hoping the children can fill the void left by their loss. When the train pulls into their quiet country station, the youngest sister, Rosebud, instantly bonds with Carol, offering him a glimpse of the love he has never known.

As the children gather around their returning father, Colonel Mandeville, they confront the fragile balance between joy and sorrow, learning how war’s shadow reaches far beyond the battlefield. Carol, a frail boy burdened by illness and the memory of a dying mother, finds unexpected strength in the warmth of his new family. The first days of their reunion promise tenderness, hope, and the quiet courage required to rebuild a life shattered by conflict.
