Description

When a foreign‑postmarked letter arrives, two grieving brothers see a chance to lift their family from poverty. Their uncle Adam, a rich merchant in Batavia, offers them passage and a role in his bustling trade network, promising wealth and a curious cousin named Lip‑lap. Haunted by their mother’s recent death, the boys cling to the hope of a new start in the exotic Dutch East Indies. Their father, still numb with grief, scrambles to secure a ship for the long journey.

The brothers board a cramped vessel and set sail across sweltering seas, dreaming of tropical markets and hidden riches. Their arrival is marked by a ferocious monsoon that lashes the harbor of Batavia, tearing down huts and shaking the pier they hope to dock at. Amid the wreckage they glimpse a bustling port where merchants barter spices, silks, and whispered secrets. The storm’s aftermath hints at a world of daring opportunities—and dangers—that will test their resolve and bind their fates together.
