Description

The story opens on a cold March evening in 1660, as the sun sinks behind the tree‑clad Hampshire Downs and the forges of a valley glow against the gathering dusk. The narrator recalls the wind that cuts like a knife and the rugged landscape that frames a nation just emerging from civil war. In this Restoration setting, loyalties are shifting, and the air is thick with talk of royalist hope and lingering Puritan restrictions.

The young narrator walks beside his seasoned father, a man of great strength and a scar from past battle, as they make their way to the historic inn known as the Flying Bull. Inside, a boisterous crowd of traders, soldiers, and locals exchange news of troop movements, gun‑flint supplies, and rumors of a looming conflict. Their conversation hints at a daring plan that will pull the boy from the quiet village life onto both land and sea, setting the stage for an adventure rooted in loyalty, bravery, and the uncertain tides of the new regime.
