About the author
Born in London in 1814, William Henry Giles Kingston spent much of his youth in Oporto, Portugal, where his father was a merchant. That early connection with travel and seafaring fed naturally into the fiction he later became famous for: brisk, moral, action-filled adventures aimed at young readers.
Kingston wrote prolifically, especially stories of life at sea and imperial-era exploration. He is often remembered for books such as Peter the Whaler and The Three Midshipmen, which helped make him one of the best-known writers of boys' adventure fiction in Victorian Britain.
He also wrote on Portuguese subjects and was associated with English versions of several Jules Verne novels published under his name. He died in 1880, but his stories remained widely read for years afterward, carrying on his reputation as a dependable teller of nautical adventure.
