About the author
Born in London on February 28, 1814, William Henry Giles Kingston spent much of his youth in Oporto, where his father worked as a merchant. He entered the family wine business but soon turned to writing, publishing works about Portugal and receiving a Portuguese order of knighthood and a pension for articles that helped support the commercial treaty of 1842.
Kingston’s first book for boys, Peter the Whaler, appeared in 1851 and proved so popular that he retired from business to write full time. Over the next three decades, he produced more than 130 adventure stories, including The Three Midshipmen, The Three Lieutenants, and The Three Admirals, while also editing periodicals and taking an active interest in emigration, sailors’ welfare, and the volunteer movement.
He was married to Agnes Kinloch Kingston, who translated several Jules Verne novels into English that were published under his name. Kingston died in Willesden, London, on August 5, 1880.
