Description

Set on the wind‑blown sand‑hills of a tiny east‑coast hamlet, the story opens with a portrait of a fishing community that lives by the sea and the tides. The villagers, hardened by the wind and the nightly herring nets, are bound together by tradition and the demanding rhythm of the ocean. At the heart of this world is the sprawling Hadden family, led by patriarch John, who commands a lugger and provides for fifteen to twenty households. Young Ben, the eighth son, is still too small for regular voyages but spends his summers shadowing his father and brothers, absorbing the language of ropes and wind.

As the season progresses, the novel gently pulls Ben toward a choice that could pull him away from the safety of his family's grind. The looming departure of his older brothers to distant ships, the danger of storms, and whispers of a kind of life begin to stir questions of duty, faith, and identity. Through salty air and the creaking hulls, Ben must learn what it means to do right, whatever the outcome may be.
