Description

From the bustling docks of Portsmouth to the shadow of the Keppel’s Head inn, a young boy watches his world tilt toward the sea. When his brother Jack is taken aboard a man‑of‑war, the family’s routine collapses, and the narrator, Peter, is left clutching a boat‑hook, dreaming of the rigging above the tide. His father, a seasoned waterman, steadies the wherry and offers a glimpse of the discipline and duty that shape a sailor’s life.

Soon the family’s fortunes intertwine with a South Sea whaler bound for distant waters. As the Intrepid slips away from the crowded harbor, Peter’s eyes follow the sails of the Lapwing and the promise of unknown horizons. The opening pages set the stage for a coming‑of‑age tale of sea‑borne adventure, where apprenticeship, camaraderie, and the harsh beauty of the ocean will test a boy’s resolve.
