Description

A young man recalls the wild, windswept beauty of his father's native Shetland, where rugged cliffs and clear coves shaped a boy’s early imagination. His father, a seasoned sailor who survived a near‑fatal encounter with ice in Baffin Bay, carried that love of the sea back to his home port, marrying a gentle Devonshire girl who soon found the northern climate too harsh. Seeking a kinder climate for his wife, he ferried the family south, swapping the stone‑hard shores of the islands for the milder breezes of Hull and Plymouth, where a modest house became their new base.

Now the narrator finds himself drawn to the sea as well, enchanted by tales of the Kite schooner and the camaraderie of shipmates. A sudden gale tests their resolve, prompting a narrow escape that hints at the perils and passions awaiting a life on the waves. Listeners are invited to share the wonder of a world where land and ocean meet, and where family, duty, and adventure are forever intertwined.
