A Victorian clergyman with a restless curiosity, he wrote hymns, novels, folklore studies, travel books, and lives of the saints. He is still widely remembered for the hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers" and for helping preserve traditional songs from Devon and Cornwall.

About the author
Born in Exeter in 1834, Sabine Baring-Gould became one of the most prolific English writers of his age. He was an Anglican priest, but his interests ranged far beyond the pulpit: he wrote fiction, history, biography, theology, travel writing, and folklore, building a reputation as an energetic and wide-ranging scholar.
He is especially known as the author of the hymn Onward, Christian Soldiers, as well as Now the Day Is Over. Alongside his religious writing, he devoted serious effort to collecting and recording traditional folk songs in the West Country, work that helped preserve music that might otherwise have been lost.
Baring-Gould lived much of his life in Devon and drew deeply on local history and legend. His books often blend learning with a vivid sense of place, which helps explain why his work still appeals to readers interested in Victorian literature, English folklore, and the quirky lives of unusually curious people.
