About the author

Born in Exeter in 1834, Sabine Baring-Gould grew into one of the great literary all-rounders of Victorian England. He was an Anglican priest as well as a novelist, antiquarian, hymn writer, and scholar, and he is often remembered today for the famous hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers."

But that only hints at his range. Baring-Gould wrote prolifically across many subjects, including folklore, saints' lives, travel, history, and fiction. He also became an important collector of English folk songs, especially in Devon and Cornwall, helping preserve material that might otherwise have disappeared.

What makes him especially interesting for modern readers is that mixture of learning and storytelling. His books often bring together legend, local tradition, and a strong sense of place, making him a rewarding author for anyone drawn to old tales, curious scholarship, and the rich texture of nineteenth-century literary life.
