1834–1924

A Victorian clergyman with a gift for storytelling, he wrote across an astonishing range of subjects, from novels and folklore to hymn texts and travel writing. He is still especially remembered as the writer of “Onward, Christian Soldiers” and as a vivid collector of local legends and odd histories.

About the author

Born in 1834, Sabine Baring-Gould was an English priest, novelist, folklorist, and antiquary whose career stretched far beyond the pulpit. He was educated at Clare College, Cambridge, was ordained in the Church of England, and later became rector of Lew Trenchard in Devon, where much of his scholarly and literary work took shape.

He published widely and energetically, producing novels, studies of saints, travel books, collections of legends, and works on folklore and popular tradition. His best-known hymn text is Onward, Christian Soldiers, but his reputation also rests on his deep interest in regional history, old songs, and the customs of the West Country.

What makes him memorable is the sheer breadth of his curiosity. He wrote for general readers as well as scholars, and his books helped preserve stories, beliefs, and songs that might otherwise have faded from record before his death in 1924.
