Description

A bustling crowd gathers on the green lawn of the great cathedral, where organ music still lingers and chants echo from the nave. Vendors and onlookers alike have turned the sacred courtyard into an impromptu marketplace, the air thick with the smell of fresh brooms, tinware and the occasional whiff of coal‑scented oil. The scene feels both reverent and chaotic, as clergy, choirboys and city officials stare in disbelief at the spectacle unfolding before the holy doors.

At the centre of the commotion, a gaunt, quick‑tongued “Cheap Jack” proclaims his wares from a ramshackle van draped in crimson curtains. Dressed in a flower‑patterned waistcoat and a cap that can be folded into a makeshift crown, he commands the attention of priests, bailiffs and curious townsfolk with equal flair. Assisting him is a wiry teenage girl with hazel eyes, who darts among the shelves, handing over items and receiving unsold goods. Their daring enterprise hints at a clash between tradition and trade, promising sharp humor and a glimpse into the lives of those who daringly blur the line between piety and profit.
