Description

The market of Ashburton quiets as afternoon settles, its stalls half‑empty and the fair’s trumpets fading into the distant chatter of returning farmers. Pasco Pepperill, a hot‑headed trader, grapples with a botched wool shipment and a risky timber deal, his temper flaring as he confronts the shrewd Coaker. Meanwhile, Kitty watches the scene from the sidelines, her sharp mind already restless for knowledge beyond the narrow expectations of her family.

The tension between profit and pride pulls the town’s residents into a web of speculation that threatens to unravel their modest lives. Kitty’s spirited uncle boasts, her selfish aunt intervenes, and even the earnest but dim‑witted Jan Pooke draws her reluctant admiration, hinting at future complications. As the first fires of conflict spark, listeners are invited to follow Kitty’s quest for independence amid a world where commerce and character clash.
