Description

In the second‑century city of Lyons, a bustling hub of trade and learning at the meeting of the Rhône and Saône, the Roman Empire’s ideals clash with a growing belief in a new faith. The philosopher‑emperor Marcus Aurelius, intent on preserving traditional rites, issues an edict that forces local magistrates to hunt down those who refuse to worship the Roman gods. Against this backdrop of temples, markets, and looming Alpine peaks, the stage is set for a dramatic test of loyalty and conviction.

Within the city’s walls, a group of believers—including the elderly bishop Pothinus, the deacon Sanctus, and Blandina, a young slave girl—are seized, interrogated, and condemned to public trial. Their steadfast refusal to renounce Christianity draws scorn from the crowd and brutal retaliation from the authorities, yet their calm testimony and quiet courage inspire those who watch. The account, preserved in a letter from the early Church, offers a vivid, unadorned portrait of how ordinary people faced extraordinary terror with profound faith.
