Born in Oulu in 1869, Kaarlo August Järvi was a Finnish writer, journalist, and teacher. He was born Kaarlo August Mällinen and took the surname Järvi in 1892. After finishing school in Oulu, he worked in journalism and later taught in different parts of Finland.
Järvi is especially remembered for writing about Oulu as it changed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. His fiction focuses on an industrializing city where old trades were fading, new kinds of work were emerging, and ordinary people had to adapt. That background gives his novels a strong sense of place and social reality.
He died in Kerava in 1942. Today, his work stands as a readable window into Finnish urban and working life during a period of major change.
