In the bustling factories of late‑19th‑century Helsinki, a nameless orphan named Pura scrapes a living as a “nokipoika,” a lanky assistant in the machine shops. Orphaned of both parents, he grows up among the clang of metal and the sour smell of oil, learning to read newspapers and to despise the ever‑present bottle that many of his comrades cling to. His quiet refusal to join the drinking circles makes him both an outsider and a target for mockery.
One evening a group of laborers, led by the foreman who is also the owner’s cousin, forces liquor on the boys and taunts Pura for his sobriety. When the foreman hurls a glass that shatters against Pura’s face, the pressure erupts into a brutal fight that leaves both men bruised and the workshop trembling. Barely regaining his breath, Pura withdraws, his anger mixed with shame, and contemplates the cost of his defiance.
Later, the factory’s “patruuni,” a seasoned overseer, summons him to a stark confrontation about discipline and temperance. Pura, still raw from the earlier clash, is forced to confront his own fears and the rigid expectations placed upon him. The encounter hints at a fragile hope that he might find a way to reconcile his dignity with the harsh demands of the industrial world.
