The story opens on a bitterly cold Finnish winter, when the mercury drops below minus thirty and the landscape is locked in ice. Yet the villagers are buoyed by the approaching Christmas, gathering under the bright church bells that ring across the moonlit sky. Inside the warm sanctuary, a newly arrived nobleman, Juhmakka, steps forward with a lavish crown that immediately draws the eyes of everyone present. His confidence and the subtle rivalry with the local pastor set a tense yet festive tone.
Around him, the parish clerk fusses with his ribbons, while the outspoken villager Pietu, known for his sharp tongue, watches the ceremony from the edge of the pews. The contrast between Juhmakka’s aristocratic bearing and the rough, earthy humor of the locals creates a vivid portrait of a community caught between tradition and ambition. As the service begins, listeners are invited to feel the chill of the winter air, the glow of candlelight, and the undercurrents of social tension that promise compelling developments.
