About the author

Born in Amsterdam in 1859, Jan Ligthart became one of the best-known Dutch teachers and education reformers of his time. He trained as a teacher in the late nineteenth century and later became head of a primary school in The Hague, where his classroom ideas and writing began to attract wide attention.

Ligthart is remembered for arguing that education should connect with a child's real life rather than rely only on rote learning and strict discipline. He wrote many articles and books about education, often in a clear, accessible style that made his ideas useful to both teachers and parents.

He died in 1916, but his influence lasted well beyond his lifetime. For readers today, his work offers a window into a moment when schooling was being rethought with more care for children's experience, curiosity, and development.
