Born on January 11, 1859, in Amsterdam, Jan Ligthart became one of the Netherlands' best-known educational reformers. He worked as a teacher and school headmaster, and he wrote widely about how schools could better match the real needs and interests of children.
Ligthart argued for teaching that was vivid, humane, and connected to ordinary life rather than dry memorization alone. Through his books, articles, and classroom practice, he helped shape modern Dutch ideas about primary education.
He died on February 16, 1916. More than a century later, he is still remembered for making education feel closer to children's lives and for pushing schools toward a warmer, more thoughtful approach.
