E. T. A. (Ernst Theodor Amadeus) Hoffmann

1776–1822

A master of the uncanny, he filled Romantic-era fiction with doubles, dreams, automata, and sly humor. His stories helped shape modern fantasy and horror, and they still feel wonderfully strange.

About the author

Born in Königsberg in 1776, E. T. A. Hoffmann was a German writer, composer, critic, artist, and jurist whose imagination ranged far beyond any single field. He was born Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, but later changed Wilhelm to Amadeus out of admiration for Mozart.

He is best known for tales in which the supernatural and the unsettling slip into ordinary life. Works such as The Sandman, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, and the collections Fantasy Pieces in Callot’s Manner and Night Pieces made him one of the defining voices of German Romanticism. His fiction had a long afterlife in music and theater too, inspiring works including Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann.

Hoffmann spent much of his working life in the law and later served in Berlin, while continuing to write and compose. He died in Berlin in 1822, but his mix of wit, nightmare, and psychological intensity kept influencing later writers far beyond his own century.
