About the author

Born in Königsberg on January 24, 1776, E. T. A. Hoffmann became one of the most distinctive voices of German Romantic literature. He trained and worked as a jurist, but he was also deeply involved in music, drawing, and criticism, and that mix of disciplines gave his fiction its unusual energy and range.

Hoffmann is especially remembered for tales that blur everyday life with obsession, fear, and the supernatural, including The Sandman and The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. His stories often move between wit and menace, combining sharp social observation with fantasy in a way that later influenced writers, composers, and artists far beyond Germany.

He died in Berlin on June 25, 1822. More than two centuries later, his work remains famous for its imagination, its dark humor, and its ability to make the familiar world suddenly feel unsettling.
