Description

In a small town the Serapion Brotherhood once gathered nightly to share stories, ideas, and a fierce loyalty to one another. Time and circumstance have torn the group apart: Sylvester has retreated to his country estate, Ottmar and Cyprian are away on business, and Vincent has vanished into the city's bustle. When Ottmar finally returns he finds the club reduced to a single, frail member, Theodore, whose lingering illness casts a pall over the once‑bright meetings.

The remainder of the volume follows their uneasy attempt to rebuild what has been lost. Lothair, haunted by a wave of despondency, argues that clinging to past friendships is both foolish and painful, while Ottmar counters with a quiet optimism about the value of shared conversation. Through earnest debates, wry observations, and moments of tender humor, the listeners are invited into a vivid portrait of friendship tested by distance, health, and the ever‑present question of what binds us together.

About the author

E. T. A. (Ernst Theodor Amadeus) Hoffmann

E. T. A. (Ernst Theodor Amadeus) Hoffmann

1776–1822

A master of the uncanny, he filled Romantic-era fiction with doubles, dreams, automata, and sly humor. His stories helped shape modern fantasy and horror, and they still feel wonderfully strange.
