A young Dresden student named Anselmus finds his afternoon turned upside‑down when, on Ascension Day, he dashes through a bustling market, collides with an old woman’s basket of apples and cake, and has his modest purse snatched in the chaos. Embarrassed and penniless, he watches the crowd’s amused chatter turn to murmurs of pity as he watches the festivities slip away. Seeking refuge, he wanders toward the quiet banks of the Elbe, settles beneath a lone linden tree, and lights a pipe gifted by his friend, the school’s deputy rector.
In the hush of the river’s golden‑yellow waves, Anselmus becomes aware of a strange, shimmering object—a golden pot that seems to pulse with an otherworldly light. The mysterious pot hints at a hidden realm that lies just beyond the ordinary streets of Dresden, drawing the curious student into a world where reality and fantasy intertwine. As he contemplates this strange invitation, the story promises a journey that will test his imagination and courage.

A master of the uncanny, this German Romantic writer filled his stories with dreams, doubles, and unsettling turns that still feel modern. He also lived a remarkably busy artistic life as a jurist, composer, music critic, and illustrator.
