About the author
Born on July 24, 1867, at Wellington College in Berkshire, Edward Frederic Benson grew up in a remarkable family headed by his father, Edward White Benson, who later became Archbishop of Canterbury. He studied at Marlborough College and King's College, Cambridge, and went on to build an unusually varied literary career.
Benson wrote novels, short stories, biographies, memoirs, and works of history, but he is best remembered for two sides of his writing: the comic brilliance of the Mapp and Lucia series and his much-loved ghost stories. Britannica describes him as a writer of fiction, reminiscences, and biographies whose satirical novels and autobiographical studies of Edwardian and Georgian society remain especially memorable.
He was an extraordinarily productive author, publishing across many genres from the 1890s until his death in London on February 29, 1940. Today, he is still admired for the mix of elegance, humor, and sly observation that makes his social satire feel fresh, while his supernatural tales continue to attract readers who enjoy classic literary chills.
