Description

A quiet scholar known only as the Professor of Ignorance spends a restless night scribbling a simple maxim about judging people by their best, then wakes with a quiet certainty that the thought holds truth. His musings echo through the sleepy village of Hayes, a place where the old stone inn still bears the memory of bustling coach routes and the river Kennet lazily winds past two rival estates. The story introduces the genteel Grampound family, whose ivy‑clad manor and thoughtful matriarch share a languid afternoon tea, hinting at the layered histories that shape the town.

Meanwhile, the neighboring Aston household looms larger and newer, its commercial patrons contrasting with the Grampounds’ faded grandeur. A subtle tension builds as a mysterious visitor, Eva, is expected to return, and the characters’ idle chatter masks deeper currents of rivalry and old secrets. Listeners are invited into a richly painted portrait of rural England, where whispered conversations and lingering summer heat set the stage for a quietly compelling drama.
