About the author
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on May 10, 1843, Benito Pérez Galdós became a novelist, dramatist, chronicler, and politician. He is widely regarded as one of the leading representatives of 19th-century Spanish realism and as a major figure in Spanish-language literature.
Galdós began publishing the Episodios nacionales in the early 1870s. This ambitious cycle of historical novels follows Spain through much of the 19th century, blending real political events with fictional characters. His other important works include Fortunata y Jacinta, Tormento, Miau, and Misericordia.
He died in Madrid on January 4, 1920. His fiction remains especially valued for its humane portrayal of everyday people and its richly detailed picture of Spanish society in a time of profound change.
