About the author
Born in Las Palmas in the Canary Islands on May 10, 1843, Benito Pérez Galdós later moved to Madrid to study law, but literature drew him in more strongly than legal practice. He became a remarkably prolific novelist, playwright, and journalist, and is widely regarded as one of the central figures of Spanish realist fiction.
His writing is especially admired for its sharp observation of society and its sympathy for ordinary people. Galdós wrote historical novels as well as contemporary stories, with the long-running Episodios nacionales tracing Spanish history through fiction. Critics have often placed him among the greatest Spanish novelists, with some comparing his importance in Spain to that of Dickens or Balzac in other literary traditions.
He was also active in public life as a politician, and his later years were marked by illness and financial difficulty. He died in Madrid on January 4, 1920, but his work has endured as a rich portrait of Spain in a century of upheaval and change.
