About the author
Born in Las Palmas on May 10, 1843, Benito Pérez Galdós became one of the central figures of Spanish literature. He moved to Madrid as a young man to study law, but the city itself became his real education: its politics, streets, and social tensions would feed his fiction for decades.
Galdós is best known for his realist novels and for Episodios nacionales, a vast series of historical novels that retells much of 19th-century Spanish history through memorable characters and carefully observed detail. He also wrote major novels such as Marianela, Miau, and Fortunata y Jacinta, and his work is often praised for its sharp eye, moral complexity, and sympathy for ordinary people.
He was also active in public life as a politician and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912. Many readers and critics have seen him as the most important Spanish novelist after Cervantes, and his work remains a rich doorway into the society, struggles, and inner lives of his time.
