About the author
Born in Las Palmas in 1843 and later settled in Madrid, Benito Pérez Galdós became a central figure in Spanish realism. His fiction is famous for its lifelike detail, memorable characters, and close attention to the social and political changes of modern Spain.
He wrote across an astonishing range, including the long historical series Episodios nacionales and major novels such as Doña Perfecta, Misericordia, and Fortunata y Jacinta, which is often regarded as his masterpiece. Again and again, his books return to the tensions between progress and tradition, private hopes and public life, and the dignity and struggle of ordinary people.
Galdós was also active in public life and wrote for the theater as well as for the page. By the time of his death in 1920, he was widely recognized as one of Spain’s most important writers, and his work still stands as one of the richest portraits of Spanish society in literature.
