A quiet coastal hamlet rises from the green hills of northern Spain, its cliffs and tidal rías softened after a recent storm. The sea now lies calm, allowing modest fishing boats to glide over a glassy surface, while rust‑colored cliffs loom like ancient sentinels over the town of Ficóbriga. Narrow, weather‑worn houses cluster around a modest square, their balconies draped with dried netting and colorful fabrics, hinting at the simple lives of mariners and laboring farmers who call the place home. Amidst this modest scenery, a striking two‑storey residence dominates the plaza, its ornate façade and flourishing garden of pines, acacias and magnolias standing out like a palace in a sea of ruin.
Inside that house, the first threads of the story begin to weave. A young woman, full of quiet resolve, moves through the fragrant courtyard, where conversations about love, ambition and the stark divide between the town’s poor and its few prosperous “indianos” echo beneath the shade of ancient trees. As the summer heat settles over the ría, her world is poised on the edge of change, promising an intimate portrait of desire and destiny in a community caught between tradition and the promise of a brighter future.

A giant of Spanish realism, he turned the dramas of everyday life into vivid, deeply human fiction. His novels capture the social and political tensions of 19th-century Spain with wit, sympathy, and an unforgettable eye for detail.
