Set during the reign of Emperor Daizong, a lively spring outing gathers poets, scholars, and courtesans on the hills outside the capital. Host Shào Bianjiā, a gentle lover of verse, lays out a playful contest: eight poems on butterflies, fish, blossoms, each to be improvised under the pressure of wine. The gathering buzzes with laughter as participants spin quick couplets, their verses echoing the rustle of blossoms and the clatter of cups.
Among the merry troupe appears Lu Qǐ, a gaunt scholar whose sharp tongue masks a fragile talent. When he fails to produce a poem, the group’s good‑natured teasing turns to uneasy tension, and he vows revenge before storming away. The episode leaves a lingering sense that the carefree revelry may soon give way to sharper intrigues, hinting at the tangled fates awaiting these lyrical friends.

A shadowy pen name from the Qing era, this author is best known for the vernacular novel Yulouchun, a work of historical fiction and social storytelling. Very little is firmly documented about the person behind the name, which adds a layer of mystery to the book's long afterlife.
