Description

A bright May afternoon in Helsinki brings the scent of fresh grass and the chirping of sparrows through an open window, echoing the hopeful pulse of a young graduate. Anni Lehtovaara, newly crowned with a philosophy degree, is packing for the train that will carry her back to her rural home, feeling the warm swell of pride after years of hard work. The city’s bustle blends with her quiet anticipation as she imagines the familiar fields awaiting her return.

Before she departs, two letters arrive—one from her mother, one from her father—each revealing a different shade of family expectation. Her father praises her diligence but questions the name she has chosen, hinting at a lingering tension between tradition and her own identity. He also notes her musical talent and suggests a path in the arts, while contrasting her with her brother Harald, who seems forever distant in Paris. These missives set the stage for Anni to weigh duty, personal desire, and the promise of a new beginning as the train whistles ahead.
