Moonlight silver‑spreads across the swollen Väinä River, turning the fields on either bank into a quiet, haunting glow. In the distance a dark castle looms, its stone walls watched over by weary guards who trade half‑joking warnings about looming attacks from the neighboring Kalparitar forces. The uneasy truce between the two peoples crackles like the river’s flow, hinting at a larger clash that threatens to upset the fragile peace.
At the heart of the castle’s cold chambers sits Atso, a young Liiviläinen taken prisoner after refusing the strange, ritual bread and wine offered by the grim priest Westhard. Strange powers stir within him, a lingering magic that both torments and empowers his restless spirit. As the moon streams through a lattice window, he dreams of the river’s gentle currents and the forest he left behind, his longing for freedom growing louder with each whispered step along the wall. The story follows his inner struggle and the uneasy watchfulness of the castle guards, setting the stage for a tension‑filled confrontation.

1869–1929
A Finnish man of letters who moved easily between writing, teaching, translation, and the theater, he brought a refined, European outlook to Finnish cultural life. His novels and short prose were noted for their polished style, while his translation work helped carry major French and Italian writers into Finnish.
