Description

A young Scottish lad named Hector Campbell finds himself caught up in the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War after the death of his father, a brave officer killed at La Rochelle. Living with a wounded sergeant in a French barracks, he spends his days mimicking military drills, dreaming of real combat, and impressing a passing officer with his knowledge of famous sieges.

When the officer sees potential in Hector, he offers the boy a place among the ranks of Turenne’s regiment. Suddenly thrust from childish games into the harsh reality of battle, Hector experiences his first siege, learns the art of discipline, and discovers the stark contrast between textbook tactics and the chaos of war. His courage and quick mind earn him the respect of seasoned soldiers.

As the conflict spreads across Europe, Hector’s journey becomes one of growth and loyalty, testing his resolve in a world where fortunes change with every cannon blast. His story captures the grit and adventure of a youth forced to mature on the front lines of history.
